CB Mic to PC ... part 1.5
Just a quick note.... while moving on to part two I noticed that I was unable to get the pinouts with a meter because apparently the mic I have with the RJ45 connector requires power to work.
This is not unusual for some mics , as they have things like LED indicators to show the PTT has been pressed, extra buttons, other features and so on.
My assumption is that the white box is providing the power the mic needs, and pthout power the PTT circuit in the microphone will not work.
I did find a note about this while researching :
There's a couple of things that have to happen to make mics work on a radio. Obviously, correct pin out is important. Also, the impedance has to be matched or you won't get good audio out of it, but the mic gain on the radio might cover that, and if not, it's not hard to match it externally. Lastly, some mics need phantom power and some don't.
That last one is the killer -- if your radio is unable to supply or suppress the phantom power for a mic that needs or can't use it, you won't be able to use the mic on the radio without some external conversion circuitry.
Beyond that, the hard part of getting it to work is finding the correct mic plug that fits the radio, finding the pin out for the radio.
So now I'm off to find a mic that does not need power, and has a 4 pin connector. I should be able to get it fairly quickly.
Overall I learned :
- Some mics need power to work
- The white box provides the power, but it is still $$$
- There has to be a better way :)
